Pest management is vital to the protection of America's food supply. Every day pest management professionals protect food from farm to table and everyplace in between including, processing facilities, warehouses, transportation vehicles, grocery stores, restaurants and your home.

On September 10, 2015 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released final rules; Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food, and Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Animal Food. The rules were statutorily mandated through the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed into law in January 2011. FSMA is a broad initiative to overhaul the national food supply system in an effort to strengthen food safety through increased accountability, oversight and preventative measures. FDA rules under FSMA require all registered food facilities to maintain a food safety plan, perform a hazard analysis and institute preventive controls and verify these preventive controls are properly working. Non-compliance with these new rules can lead to hefty fines and lengthy injunctions.

The new FSMA standards have brought increased scrutiny and oversight to the entire food industry which requires sanitation standards only achievable through proper pest management practices. NPMA has developed comprehensive "2016 Pest Management Standards for Food Processing & Handling Facilities" and accompanying test and study guide as an invaluable resource to protect food and comply with FSMA. NPMA continues to work with Federal Agencies and major global auditing companies to assist in ensuring the safety of America’s food supply.
