Spokesperson Policy

Approved by the Board of Directors October 25, 2013

Presentation of NPMA within the Industry
It shall be the policy of NPMA that only the President, Executive Vice President, or a person appointed by one of these individuals shall be authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA within the industry. Those individuals who are authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA shall do so responsibly, recognizing that speaking on behalf of NPMA generally means to communicate or report authoritatively on: (1) published information that has been developed or reliably secured by NPMA; (2) actions and activities of NPMA; and (3) official positions or policies of NPMA as articulated in Board-approved resolutions or position statements. Commentary on matters outside of these areas should be identified by a spokesperson as opinion (based on one’s own experiences, observations, etc.) and not attributed to NPMA.

Presentation of NPMA to Consumers and the General Public
It shall be the policy of NPMA that only the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Public Affairs, Director of Technical Affairs, or a person appointed by one of these individuals shall be authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA to the general public (i.e. - consumers). Such individuals who are authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA shall do so responsibly and with diligence to make sure all information and facts that are shared are accurate and appropriate.

Presentation of NPMA to Legislative and Regulatory Officials
It shall be the policy of NPMA that only the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Government Affairs, Director of Government Affairs, Director of Technical Affairs, or a person appointed by one of these individuals shall be authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA to legislative and regulatory officials. Such individuals who are authorized to speak on behalf of NPMA shall do so responsibly and with diligence to make sure all information and facts that are shared are accurate and appropriate.

NPMA does not endorse or disparage persons, products, companies, or organizations, and those authorized to speak on behalf of the Association are discouraged from themselves expressing opinions of this nature, as those statements may be erroneously attributed to NPMA. Individuals designated to speak on behalf of NPMA are encouraged to cite any data, position statements, or other NPMA published information relevant to the topic. Not all situations can be anticipated in a written policy, and individuals must use their best judgment, understanding that the best interests of NPMA are paramount. Therefore, when faced with a situation or topic that is potentially controversial, the spokesperson should consult with the NPMA President or Executive Vice President prior to making further comments.
